Braking resistors

Not all braking resistors are the same -

REOhm is the answer for modern inverter technology

When an electric motor works as a generator (electromotive brake), the braking resistor protects the machine from a voltage rise in the DC link. At the same time, the reduction of current leads to a speed reduction of the engine and helps to brake the machine.

REO braking resistors achieve a better heat dissipation and better dynamic behaviour by filling heat conducting material surrounding the wound body. 
REO resistors are short-circuit proof and self-extinguishing. They guarantee a high level of operational safety and are overload-proof in case of short-term loads for your applications (e.g. wind power engineering, railway engineering and automotive engineering).

  • REOHM BW 151

    Braking resistor, max. continous power: 300 W

    BW 156
    • Resistance values: 1,1 - 2000 Ohm
    • Continuous power: 50 - 300 W
    • max. operating voltage: 900 V

    The braking resistor BW 151 is short-circuit proof and has a very good heat dissipation. Braking resitors of REO protect the machine from a voltage rise in the intermediate circuit. They are available as a braking resistor (BW Series) or as a charging resistor  (Series R).

    The profile resistors REOhm 151 are also UL-certified and have a power of 50 W up to 30 W (also as combination).

  • REOHM BW 152

    Braking resistor, max. continous power: 330 W

    BW 156
    • Resistance values: 3 - 620 Ohm
    • Continuous power: 120 - 330 W
    • max. operating voltage: 900 V

    The braking resistor of the series REOHM 152 are mounted close to the frequency converter and they are designed for drives with frequency converters of small to medium output. The Series 152 is available as a braking resistor (BW Series) or as a charging resistor (Series R).

    As BW (Braking resistor)


    When an electric machine operates as a generator (Electromotive brake), the braking resistor protects the machine from a voltage rise in the intermediate circuit. The current reduces als the speed of the machine. 


    As R (Charging resistor, damping resistor, filter resistance, etc.)


    The charging resistor is a current limiting resistor for the charging and discharging of capacitors and limitates for example the current flowing into the intermediate circuit capacitor inrush current. For this the device must be designed for a high single pulse energy and nominal voltage. The inductance of the resistor contributes to limit the inrush current, so wirewound resistors are the right choice.


    As UL version


    In addition to the high protection class IP66, the profile resistors REOhm 153 are also UL-certified and have a power of 100 W up to 400 W (also as combination).

    • Suitable for IP 65 applications

    • The REO flat resistor can be screwed under or on
      the side of a frequency drive using a mounting plate

    • In case of failure of resistor, this will become highly resistive

  • REOhm series 153 (UL)

    Max. continous power: 360 W

    • Continuous power: 100 - 400 W

    The BW 153 braking is designed  for drives with frequency converters of small to medium output. The installation is close to the frequency converter. 
    In addition to the high protection class IP66, the profile resistors REOhm 153 are also UL-certified and have a power of 100 W up to 400 W (also as combination).

    The braking resistor REOHM 154 protects the machine from a voltage rise in the intermediate circuit, if an electric machine operates as a generator (Electromotive brake). The current reduces also the speed of the machine. 


    The serie REOHM 154 is available as braking resistor (series BW) or as charging resistor (series R).

    • Continuous power: 500 - 3000 W
    • max. operating voltage: 900 - 4200 V

    Due to their high protection class up to IP66, the resistors of the REOHM 155 series are particularly suitable for aggressive environments.Better heat dissipation and better dynamic behaviour of the resistors have been achieved by filling heat conducting material surrounding the wound body. The resistors of the series 155 are available as braking resistors, charging resistors or high-voltage resistors.

    As high-voltage resistors


    REO high-voltage resistors are designed, produced and certified especifically for the railway technology. The specially designed winding technology allows a higher withstand voltage due to the spatial separation of the wires. The use of railway-compatible and high quality materials, together with the complete encapsulation in profile design allows protection ratings up to IP66.

    • Capacity can be doubled by fan that is provided with screw thread
